Hello lovelies! Please bear with me while I make the transition back from WordPress to Blogger. I need to go through and insert images and do some more tweaks.

Interview/Giveaway: I Own the Dawn by M.L. Buchman

C: Hi and welcome to Redheads! What made you come up with the idea for this book/series?

MB: Stereotypes have always made me crazy (I’m a male romance author, so this should be no big surprise). A few years ago, for a thriller I was writing, Swap Out!, I discover this amazing U.S. Army secret helicopter regiment, the 160th. These are the folks who delivered bin Laden among many others we’ll probably never hear about. As part of my research, I read their application, only men in the helicopters. And my anti-stereotype mind went hmm…. So, I sent the first woman into the regiment in The Night is Mine. I didn’t send her just because she was a woman, or they were integrating the unit, but because she was so bloody good that they had to let her in. Next thought, what a great place to find the kind of man she deserves. Suddenly I had a romance on my hands and soon my first national sale.

C: Was there a lot of time that went into researching this series?

MB: A great deal. I’m not military and I wanted to get it right. Thought I’ve been a small plane pilot, I’ve never flown in a helicopter, but I wanted it to feel real. Most of all, I wanted it to be how a soldier thought, not a civilian. I read dozens of books, articles, and blogs. Military memoirs, flight manuals, hand-to-hand combat… the list is a long one. Then I interviewed ex-Marines, a woman who flew as crew chief on a Black Hawk in Iraq, a Coast Guard rescue pilot, and more. I wanted the world of my love story to feel real, to be as authentic as I could make it.

C: Is there sort of a ritual you go through in your writing process? Do you listen to certain music that goes along with the feel of the book or have to have some chocolate to nibble on?

MB: Loud rock ‘n’ roll (60s & 70s mostly, though my kid has been feeding me a playlist of the last decade that I’m starting to get a real liking for). And I used to eat black licorice until I felt ill, though I’ve recently kicked that habit and now have a mug of green tea and a piece or two of good dark chocolate instead.

Now more fun questions:

C: When you were growing up, what did you say you were going to grow up to be?

MB: A pilot. Always wanted to be one. Only after I earned my private license was it discovered that I was probably too red-green colorblind to make it a career. I could fly, but not the big jets I’d always dreamed of. I hunt up my license years ago, but I dream of some day owning a plane again. Just a little one for bee-bopping between small airports, especially ones with good pie shops.

C: Do you have any hidden talents or something about you that most people don’t know?

MB: I find people are always surprised by my eclectic background, except shock might be a better word when it’s an employer looking over my resume. I can single-hand a 50’ sailboat in a 50 mile-an-hour wind. I’m a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I’ve bicycled solo around the world. I’m a quilter. And, the big one… shh, don’t tell, I’m a male who’s a romance author.

C: Have any embarrassing habits you would love to change/stop but can’t?

MB: Kind of, yea. Don’t get me started on my family, once started I can’t shut up. Fifteen years on and my wife and I still hold hands wherever we go. I’m so proud of my step-daughter (I got her pre-packaged at the age of 6 –now a college student) that I won’t shut up as I dig out my wallet pictures of her chronicling almost every year. I’m the romantic of the family. I can’t stop until I’m well past where people are rolling their eyes.
