The last thing vampire bodyguard Zane wants to do is to guard a hybrid, a half-vampire, half-human, whose father wants to keep her a virgin. Known for his violent temper and callous lack of compassion, Zane’s out-of-control rage, born of the cruelty he suffered during the Holocaust, drives him to focus only on revenge. Trying to find the last of his torturers is his only goal in life.

Portia is a young hybrid with a serious dilemma: in a few weeks, her body will be set in its final vampire form. If she is to avoid having to live out her immortal life as a virgin, she must find a lover in that short time—something her father hires Zane to prevent.

The moment Portia and Zane meet, rules begin to bend, and a forbidden attraction bursts into flames hotter than the hell of Zane’s past. But that past threatens to pull them apart unless they can overcome their prejudice, forsake hate for love, and revenge for forgiveness.

MY THOUGHTS: ***SPOILER ALERT***

I was really looking forward to this book. Zane is a troubled soul which steams from his past time spent in a Nazi concentration camp. Ever since he was tortured and turned into a vampire, he has made it his mission to hunt down the men responsible and to hell with anything and anyone that gets in the way. Having his emotions shut off for over sixty years, he is surprised to find he has a strong urge to protect his latest charge, Portia. Oh and let's not forget he has a soft spot for a certain Lab puppy, named Z, that was left on his doorstep. Zane decides he will defy his superiors and Portia's father's commands/wishes, he sets out to take care of Portia's little virginity "problem." He just never expected that he wouldn't be able to get enough of her or be able to stay away from her.

Portia is a reserved, sheltered college student that just found out that in order to avoid a life of pain, she must lose her virginity before her body sets to its final form at her twenty-first birthday. Determined to see it happen regardless of her father's wishes, she sets out to lose it only to be deterred by the freakishly sexy vampire bodyguard her farther assigned to her while he's away on business. When Portia finally tells Zane why she is on a mission to sneak out to attend parties, he can't believe a father would knowingly do that to a daughter but he also can't deny that he can tell she is telling nothing but the absolute truth. Zane agrees to help. Things get hot between the two real fast. (Don't want to spoil that part of the book. I'll let you read it and see how good it is on your own) Everything goes into a downward spiral when Zane finds out that her father is not only one of the men who tortured him at the concentration camp, but is the mastermind behind everything.

When Zane finds out Portia's father has kidnapped her and is going to force her to marry someone he deems a suitable mate, he confesses he love and his painful past to his friends in order to get their help to rescue Portia.

I absolutely positively loved Zane's character. I knew his story was going to be great because he seemed to have the most tortured soul and those always give you the most hope when they finally find love. Zane was no exception. I fell in love with him and Portia as a couple. She brought out all the good things in Zane and I loved that she was able to show us the softer side of him. I think he's my new favorite Scanguards employee! :)

RATING:

I love this series. Tina can't come out with them fast enough!

You can always count on tantalizing scenes in any of the Scanguards books. This is no exception. :)

  1. Fabulous review! I'm definitely moving this series up my list!! so what's the background of the series? are the Scanguards a brotherhood or something like that?

  2. They are actually all employees of Scanguards which is a security firm so basically bodyguards. They guard both humans and immortals alike. You should definitely start reading the series. The first book is Samson's Lovely Mortal. It's great and they have some humor in them too. :)
