Battle of the Bitches Guest Post/Giveaway with Leslie C. Ferdinand

BATTLE OF THE BITCHES: JULIA BARNES WALKER & KAROLYN CROSBY DELEON

Julia Walker is the matriarch in Leslie C. Ferdinand’s Picture Perfect (2013). Karolyn DeLeon is her counterpart in Wicked Allure (2012). While the two books are not connected, both mothers are supreme bitches. They have agreed to sit down and chat to explain what makes them tick and how they are similar but still so vastly different.

Karolyn - What makes you such a snob, Julia?

Julia - Karolyn, I come from a very old and prestigious family in New Orleans. I have every right to demand certain standards from the people I associate with. I do wonder why you’re such a manipulator.

K - As if you aren’t, Julia. I come from as lauded a background as you. I expect to have things done my way and when I see a situation going in a different direction, I find a way to steer it back on track.

J -Except with your daughter, Madigan.

K - I have no wish to speak of Madigan, Mrs. Walker. I would much prefer to discuss Elliot, your son. You were railroading him into marrying a woman any fool could see was wrong for him. Why put him through that?

J - In the interest of this interview, I’ll ignore the fact you insinuated I am a fool. I want my Elliot’s life to be picture perfect. I chose Rachel because I thought she would be his perfect mate—accomplished, beautiful, and a champion for other women.

K - And Alexis? What did you think upon your first meeting?

J - I know my children—

K - Apparently, not well enough—

J - Hmmph. As I started to say, I know my children—unlike you—so I knew the moment I set my gaze upon Alexis, the reason for Elliot’s behavior. She is a fiery one and won’t hold her opinions for anyone. But Walkers keep their promises and I didn’t want my son to be labeled by the press a playboy and a heartbreaker. Besides, there are too many gold diggers out to snag themselves an unsuspecting gentleman, whom they manipulate into marrying. Not in this family. You have to be established in your own right and pass the Walker test.

K - I see. Do you think you’re a good mother, Julia?

J - The best! Because of the way I raised my children, they are all very successful in their chosen fields.

Do you think you’re a good mother, Karolyn? You try to thwart your adult daughters at every turn. You seem resentful and jealous of them. What is it you don’t like about them? Or do you have a gripe against one more than the other?

K - My daughters have youth. No matter what they do, their father loves them. Jack first noticed me because of my beauty. We had much in common. But as the girls grew up, the spotlight faded away from me. The last straw was when I lost the son Jack wanted. My girls are more than I can deal with. Brianna almost humiliated the entire family with her escapades when she was sixteen. Kelly, at least, is obedient and dutiful to me.

J - You think? I believed the same of Elliot. Kelly’s obedience to you will change when she falls in love.

K - She’s already in love, Julia. But, as I said before, I arrange situations so that I achieve the result I want.

J - That’ll backfire, Mrs. DeLeon. Mark my words, dear. Your manipulations didn’t work with Madigan, your youngest.

K - Madigan defies me every chance she gets and has absolutely no respect for me.

J - Why should she? As you pointed out, she’s a grown woman. Besides, you seem to have a thing for her lover?

K - Zachary Steele is a fine, virile man. Much like your Elliot and—

J - We can discuss many things, but you’ll leave the name of Elliot—in the context in you are implying—out of your mouth. Didn’t the media mention you’ve remarried the girls’ father?

K - And?

J - You appear edgy and angry. Why?

K - I don’t like your questions.

J - As if I care. We’ve agreed to the interview and you will answer me. Unless you’re finally coming to your senses and realize how wrong you are. You discuss respect, but you’re disrespecting your husband.

K - My relationship with Jack is complicated. I’ve wanted Zach for a long time. I believe I’m the better woman for him. But I won’t jeopardize what I have with my husband to sleep with Mr. Steele.

J - As if he’d have you. He only has eyes for Madigan. I’m quite shocked he allows you to treat your daughters as you do.

K - One of my stipulations of our reconciliation was he stay out of my dealings with the girls. He deals with them his way and I deal with them my way. Your husband, Frank, seems just as pussy-whipped. He allows you to run roughshod over your children.

J - I do what I do because I love my children. It might not always be the best way but Frank understands I would die before I harm them on purpose. You, on the other hand, are arrogant and self-serving. The Walkers are a close-knit family. The DeLeons are fractured because of your animosity for your girls fueled more because of Zachary Steele’s rejection of you than anything else.

K - You do believe you’re a paragon of motherhood. Hats off to the great Julia Walker, perfect lady, perfect mother, perfect wife. I’m surprised you lowered yourself to sit down with the likes of me.

J - I am, too, because the only woman I’ve met who’s more of a bitch than you is Elliot’s former fiancĂ©, Rachel Evans. And, if you tried to get anywhere near Elliot, you’d have Alexis to deal with.

K - I believe this meeting is coming to a close.

J - Finally, something we agree on. Please avoid the paparazzi. The DeLeons may play the media but I refuse to have our personal lives displayed for the world to see.

K - The paparazzi go with the territory of the rich and famous.

J - The infamous, you mean?

K - You run your family as you see fit, Mrs. Walker, and allow me to run mine as I see fit.

J - Of course, dear. Do have a good day.

Bare It All Blog Tour - Q&A with Lori Foster

Having a total fangirl moment right now. Do you know how freaking excited I am to have the one and only Lori Foster on the blog today???? When I got the opportunity to hop on this tour, I was squeeing with delight. After the interview there will be a giveaway for a copy of Lori's Bare It All!! And if you want to read my take on the book, scroll down for the review. The time has come for you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

How did you come up with the title for you new book, BARE IT ALL?

The hero’s name is Reese Bareden, and back during his school days he got caught – without his towel – in the locker room by a bunch of cheer leaders. They dubbed him “Bare It All Bareden.” Now, the reason why the cheerleaders were sneaking in the locker room to get a peek… that’s something you’ll have to find out by reading the book!

Do you you listen to anything when writing? If so, what kind of music?

Yes! LOVE my playlist. I have a lot of Kid Rock on there. He’s my fave.
Also KORN. Lots & lots of KORN. Some Marilyn Manson. Cage the Elephant. Nirvana.
I have a few artists where I like only one song – like “Rumour” by Adele, or “List of Demands” from Saul Williams.  Overall I have around 200 songs on my playlist.

How did you come up with the idea for your book?

No idea. The ideas are just... there. I’m so amazed by authors who can teach this stuff, because it’s impossible for me. I’ll be minding my own business (often working on a different book) and bam! I get hit upside the head with characters who want on the page – or sometimes they just show up on the page without even introducing themselves first – and sometimes that’s not enough for them. They want their own books too!
It’s almost magical to me. I could never dissect the process or explain it.
It just is.
Once the characters are there, THEY tell me what the idea is. They lead me through the plot, sometimes page by page – although sometimes they tell me the whole story right up front.

What are you reading right now?

“The Best Man” by Kristin  Higgins. It’s delicious. But I’m reading it slowly because I don’t allow myself to read it except for when I’m on the treadmill. See, I’m trying to con myself into getting a little more exercise. So far so good. I spend 20 to 30 minutes a day (minus weekends) on the stupid torturous device. Only the awesomeness of the book is making it possible. This is my first Kristin Higgins book – recommended to me by my Facebook followers – and wow, does she ever weave a wonderful tale! I’m hooked.

What are you working on next?

That depends on how long it takes me to finish my current manuscript – which will be book 4 in the “Love Undercover” series. If I finish it early enough, I’ll start a new L. L. book, meaning more urban fantasy and more graphic gore. If it takes longer to finish, then I’ll jump into the next romance single title.

Check out the Bare It All trailer!!!

A cop's craving to know more about the woman next door could prove fatal

As the person responsible for taking down a brutal human trafficker, Alice Appleton fears retaliation at every turn. No one knows about her past, which is exactly how she prefers it...until the sexy cop next door comes knocking.

Detective Reese Bareden thinks he knows what makes women tick, but his ever-elusive neighbor keeps him guessing like no other. Is his goal to unmask Alice's secrets? Or protect her from a dangerous new threat? One thing is certain: their chemistry is a time bomb waiting to explode. And with no one to trust but each other, Reese and Alice are soon drawn into a deadly maze of corruption, intrigue and desire-and into the line of fire.

My Thoughts:

I loved Run the Risk and I was definitely a fan of Reese in this book so I was more than anxious to get my hands on Bare It All. And can I say, I freaking LOVE Lori’s covers! I don’t where Harlequin finds these cover models but they are so ruggedly handsome I swoon over each one.

So we got a little preview in the first Love Undercover book of Reese and Alice. Reese is constantly trying to talk to her but is consistently ignored until he brings home a puppy that was left for dead in the middle of the highway. Apparently this was the ice breaker for Alice who immediately took to the dog. Seeing his in, Reese uses the dog to get closer to Alice. He definitely has the opportunity to get closer when the event from the end of Run the Risk has him sleeping on her couch. But neither of them are complaining. Sooner rather than later they start doing the horizontal tango but even though they have shared this intimacy, Alice still has reservations about sharing some of her secrets. One thing leads to another and she decides it’s time to tell Reese what he has been dying to know and in walks in a character from another beloved Foster book. I love that connection! It made me smile.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to like Alice for Reese. As a person, she seems super sweet and a little naĂŻve. But the more I read, the more I really started to like her. I felt like she was a flower that was blossoming in front of my eyes. It cracked me up that she would have no issues openly checking him out. I never would have expected someone like her to do that. I think that was my turning point with Alice. She may be prim and proper but she’s passionate about something, she goes for it. No matter if it puts her life in danger or not.

Reese Bareden. Detective. Check. Tall. Check, check. Alpha male. Check, check, check. Dropping panties now. Check, check, check, check. I am a sucker for a cop but add in the tall and alpha male factors and I am all over that like white on rice. Oh and let’s not forget that he has the body of a god. I don’t blame Alice for her blatantly checking him out. But he is more than just good looks. We see him wanting to protect Alice and see that he wants to be around her and make her smile. He is an all around good guy. A type of guy that any woman would be beyond lucky to have.

Definitely check this series out if you haven’t already. You could read this book without reading the first but you will miss some of the things that went on previously and this book picks up directly after. And don’t worry about if you will like the first in the series. It’s awesome! I can’t wait to read more in this series. I can’t get enough!

The Wanderer

Secretly, he waits for his enemy to take his head so he may leave this world for good.

Can a tiny Selkie melt his hardened heart and restore his faith in a power far greater than himself? When history repeats itself, can he save her from death’s embrace or will they be robbed of a future again?

EXCERPT:

Slowly Jennifer turned her head to take another look at the big guy leaning against the wall. Was he really looking at her? And if so, why?

She got brave. Out of her right eye she took a good long look at him. God knows she had never seen anyone that tall. He was no less than 275 pounds, solidly build, raven black hair combed straight back. He had a stern hard face with a perfect square chin. There was something about him she couldn’t quite put her finger on. It was like he was a wild animal on the prowl for something to consume, yet she sensed a gentleness about him like she did with most animals.

Strange, he’s been in the house for a while and its dark outside, why is he still wearing those shades? Maybe he's a celebrity she didn’t recognize. Then again, maybe he’s high and trying to hide it.

He was richly dressed in an Italian black custom silk suit which had been tailored to fit his large frame. No suits came off the rack and looked like that. His black shirt, definitely silk, was unbuttoned to the middle of his smooth muscular chest showing his dark tanned naked skin.

Why does a man like that wax? Surely with his dark hair and features he would definitely have chest hair. Just as she was giving him a once over, he reached up with one hand lowering his glasses and looked directly at her. He had the most penetrating midnight black eyes she had ever seen.

With their eyes locked on each other she was lost, hypnotized, as she felt him reach into her soul. She knew he caught her staring at him, yet she couldn’t turn away. Part of her wanted to remain lost in his eyes, the other part of her wanted to run for her life.

EXCERPT:

Raphael’s eyes fluttered open. He saw the familiar woman with her long platinum hair blowing in the wind as she walked towards him. Her face was all too familiar yet he still didn’t know who she was. He searched his mind trying to remember if she’d ever told him her name in all the hours they spent making love in his dreams. He was too weak from blood loss to focus his cognitive abilities--instead he just stared at the beautiful angelic looking young woman who knelt down beside him.

Wondering if he was dreaming he finally asked, “Who are you?”

She brought her finger up to her lips in a motion to quiet him. Her lips didn’t move yet he heard her say, “I am the one for you.”

The beauty leaned over him, her long hair draping him in a coverlet of warmth. He looked into her eyes. Those eyes, there is something about those eyes.

She placed her wrist on his lips and heard her say, “Drink and live.”

He was too weak to do anything else. He closed his eyes and took which she offered so freely. His nostrils filled with the scents of benzoin and orange blossoms. The warm ambrosia of her blood tasted sweeter than the finest navel oranges he had ever sampled. He moaned, then moaned again as his body reacted instantly to her life giving blood. His pulse quickened, his heart skipped a couple of beats and his erection grew to its full length yet it remained hidden behind the zipper of his pants. Having his angel on top of him, feeding him, in real life and not in a dream, was beyond his wildest fantasy. Raphael knew in that one moment she was the only woman for him and he would go to his grave before he took another.

EXCERPT (Explicit):

When Gemma and Izzy express interest in his upcoming sale, Godfrey Cross invites them to his Goth clothes store after hours. The girls have been teasing him and only have a vague idea as to how far Cross will go…

Excerpt

The next time they came out, giggling and flushed, they wore matching black PVC dresses with black studded leather collars. Gemma’s expression was downright naughty, and Izzy looked smug. Cross immediately imagined bringing them into the club like that, on a tandem leash, but freshly spanked and biddable. He stifled a hiss as his arousal evaded his control.

“So are you two a matched set now?” He arched a brow.

Gemma bit her lip then prowled over to him, dragging Izzy in her wake. “I think he likes these, Izzy. What is it, knuckle-dragger? The twin thing? The collar thing? Are we making you think bad thoughts?”

“I warned you I’m no gentleman.” Cross adjusted himself through his jeans without any attempt at being subtle.

They both looked amused. Not easily shocked, for vanilla girls.

“So if we touched you, would you fall at our feet and worship us?” Gemma looked at Cross speculatively.

“Maybe I should tie your hands together to avoid that?” he growled. Girls didn’t talk to him like this. They ducked their heads and did what they were told. He had to fight down mild annoyance. This girl wasn’t his... yet. If she was, she’d be clutching her sore ass by now, with fat tears rolling down her cheeks. His heart beat faster. This time he didn’t hesitate to get into her personal space as he loomed over her. Izzy, who she still clutched, got the same view. Now both of them looked up at him with wide eyes. Even vanilla girls understood this body language. Godfrey Cross was not a man to fuck with.

After a short silence, Izzy lifted her hands, giving him a sassy grin that paled compared to Gemma’s prior challenge. “I double-dare you.”

He looked down. Offering her wrists. Brat. Gemma snickered, obviously thinking she was safe.

Without pause, he pulled Gemma’s arms behind Izzy’s back. “Stay.” He grabbed Izzy’s wrists and put them behind her too, then zip-tied their same wrists together. They’d actually cooperated. He stepped back and admired his work. They were stuck with Gemma hugging Izzy, and Izzy unable to get away. Nice. He generally preferred leather cuffs or rope for real bondage, but the zip ties would do.

“Hey!” Both girls protested briefly, testing their bonds. The sound of PVC sliding along PVC was sexy. And the collars. Nothing was hotter than a woman wearing a collar – except maybe for a woman wearing his collar.

“Oh no! What’s to become of us, dear Izzy? Now we’re totally at his mercy.” So much sarcasm in such a little girl. They looked at him expectantly. Despite the brave words, Gemma seemed unsettled. “I bet he’s like every other straight guy I know and he’s hoping we’ll kiss.”

Izzy laughed breathlessly. Though Gemma watched him, she was staring in fascination at Gemma’s mouth.

“A couple of straight, good girls like you? I wouldn’t put money on it,” he mocked.

Gemma’s brows shot up. “Good girl? You wish.” Her face swung to Izzy, who looked at her with trepidation and even flinched the tiniest amount.

As Gemma leaned toward her, pulling her closer, Izzy tried to squirm away. “Don’t,” she squeaked. Gemma ignored her and pressed her lips to the girl’s in a chaste way, then withdrew.

Cross laughed. “You’re a virgin, Gemma? That’s all that kiss said to me.”

She glared at him, not noticing the way Izzy’s tits heaved or her helpless look of arousal.

Gemma snorted and turned back to her new friend. Challenge accepted. She pulled Izzy closer, with the girl whimpering but not trying hard to stop her. Slowly Gemma leaned in until their lips almost touched. Her tongue tip traced the seam of Izzy’s lips, teasing, testing, like she wanted to see what Izzy would do.

Fucking hot. He resisted grabbing her hair and instructing. If the building had fallen down, he might not have noticed. This was better than his daydreams.

Gemma bit the girl’s bottom lip – he could see the tug of skin as she pulled. When Izzy gasped she slipped her tongue into her mouth and started to kiss her in earnest. Izzy submitted, relaxing into her arms then kissing her back. When, at last, Gemma pulled away, Izzy mewled, trying to follow her and not let it end.

Now that, that, was fucking hot.

They were both pink and blotchy, breathing hard, looking at him.

Gemma exhaled shakily. “Happy now?”

He couldn’t stay out of this anymore – all of his Dom instincts were pacing the cage, trying to escape. Vanilla or not? Time to find out.

Drawing himself up, he towered over them and growled. “Again.”

“What?” Gemma whispered, brow furrowed.

He glowered down at her, almost touching them he was standing so close. He ran a finger under the collar she’d put on as a joke, slowly, letting her feel the pressure. “I didn’t tell you to stop, girl. Do it again.”

Izzy backpedaled, almost pulling Gemma off her feet. He stopped Izzy with a hand on the nape of her neck, and steadied Gemma with a hand under her elbow.

“Stop trying to get away, Izzy. I know you like this.” He waited a second to let the idea sink in. “Just let it happen. You can blame me later, if you need to.” He held her with thumb and forefinger wrapped around her neck, over the collar. He stroked gently with his thumb. Though trembling, she didn’t argue.

When he looked back to Gemma, she stared him in the eye. She didn’t want to like this, but somewhere in there, deep down, she did.

“Do it. Now.”

He could feel the heat coming off of her. She liked this, even if she wouldn’t say so. And neither of them had told him to fuck off or untie them.

After one, long, exasperated sigh, Gemma took up the kiss where she’d left off.

He placed a gentle hand on the back of her neck too. She tried to jerk away but groaned into Izzy’s mouth. Small noises of pleasure gave way to frustrated moans from Izzy. Somehow his hands had entangled in their hair, and soon he couldn’t help himself and started controlling their movements. The writhing of their bodies, their sounds and the way they’d wrapped themselves around each other – fuck. His cock pressed hard against his jeans, not used to being denied for so long. He was surprised his dick hadn’t detached and gone stomping through the store like Godzilla through Tokyo.

Chet Castle is a businessman who has everything, except the ability to trust. Burned by a money-hungry fiancée, he refuses to get involved in any relationship that has a shelf life longer than a head of lettuce.

Intrigued by her ambition—and determined to get her in bed—Chet offers Jill the chance of a lifetime: work as his live-in chef and he’ll help her get her catering business off the ground. When sparks fly in the kitchen, Jill realizes what’s cooking is a recipe for disaster…

So what do you think about the cover? I really like it. Entangled Publishing always has some of the best covers! :) Gets me ready for summer. What do you like about it?
